“Twisting” ticks is a very frequently discussed topic among epidemiologists, veterinarians, and especially the general public.

Without considering my personal opinion, it is always important to realize that the tick needs to be removed by any means possible. “Tick twisting” should not be a movement like unscrewing a light bulb; a tick does not have a thread, and it does not matter which direction we rotate.

The rotation should not be more than 180 degrees. Using the fork, we slide underneath the tick, gently rotate, and try to pull the tick out. If this does not work, it is necessary to choose a smaller version of the fork and repeat the process.

It is also important to realize that the area still needs to be disinfected and monitored. If the tick was infected, then unfortunately it can sometimes end really badly. But so this does not end on a negative note, I personally have 4 cats and now pay attention. Every single day, and I really mean every day, I remove at least 2 ticks from my cats. We live in Slovakia, where ticks are absolutely common, and I have to say that none of my cats has ever died, even though I twist those ticks out like crazy.

One extra note. We have outdoor cats and many times they disappear for longer periods. More than once I have found a scratched-open tick that the cat dealt with by itself. Even our dogs sometimes bite ticks out of the cats’ necks. Funny, but that’s nature :D
