Descrição

I have a couple of chest freezers that have been wonderful to be able to stockpile various foods, but there is an inherent problem with chest freezers: trying to get the stuff out of the bottom. If you have one yourself, you probably already know how it can be: either pull everything out to get the lasagna from a year ago (if you're lucky) from the bottom, or fight the constant avalanche of frozen food falling while you try to dig it out, somehow ending with less space available than you started. Because of this, my spring project was to organize a system to make life easier. From this need, I tinkered around and eventually came up with what I call Cryofinity.

Its a system of baskets that stack perfectly with built in handles that keep things tidy. While designing, I did decide to forgo dedicated handles in favor of the holes that were going to already be throughout the basket. I hadn't wanted the baskets to have solid walls for a couple of reasons: 1) most obviously to save on material, 2) looks nice in my opinion with the patterning 3) helps circulate air to keep things frozen easier 4) one could put the entire basket in a sink of cold running water to aid in thawing in the event of a frozen good molding to the shape of the basket too much (like say a soup), threatening to break the basket to remove the food and 5) as the handles themselves, as they were sized for fingers to easily fit in, but downsized from my original prototype size to reduce stringing from the long bridging.

As one can imagine with the name, it is indeed based on the popular Gridfinity system's standard. However I wanted to ensure flexibility on sizing for food items to help minimize any wasted space inside the freezer itself. To that end, instead of the full 42mm grid, I opted to design using the half 21mm grid sizing. As such, all of the X&Y measurements on the plates are in the half grid count, not as full grid counts. Example 10x5x25U instead of full sized 5x2.5x25U, as that wouldn't work quite right. I did increase the wall thickness to a sturdier 5mm instead of the 1.2 or 2mm I could've generated it as within Fusion (Huge thanks to whomever made the Gridfinity generator plugin for Fusion, that tool is beyond awesome!)

When you do want to sit down to print, do NOT print it in PLA, but instead use ABS. supports are not needed at all, as the holes have been sized to allow the printer to bridge the gap. ABS handles the cold far better than PLA could, and you run the risk of the PLA becoming too brittle and breaking during usage. Printing is otherwise straightforward, size each bin based on the food you want to store inside, such as individual meals, portioned out meats, veggies or the like, etc.

Side notes:

  • If you don't already have one, I would suggest investing in a vacuum sealing system to portion out food easier, and it'll all fit in better that way too.
  • Down at the bottom, I would suggest swinging by the GRIPS design to generate an interlocking baseplate for the bottom. I would suggest leaving it at the normal 42mm grid spacing, as the extra division would use more material unnecessarily. I didn't design it, but I do find it rather useful
  • to help estimate the sizing of bins, This Gridfinity ruler is my go to tool to figure out what size bins I need to print, since there are half bin tick marks, as well as this other version for flipped reading
  • as far as the pictures of the printed bins, the one with the butter inside is the old bin design for the walls. As you can see, the holes were too big for the printer to handle cleanly. The bin with the meats in it is the new bin wall design. I not only downsized the holes appropriately, but I also centered the initial hexagon at the top rather than starting it at the bottom left of each bin. To me its a much cleaner look overall. For the shot of the freezer itself, I have another freezer full of stuff that I'm slowly transferring over to this one as I continue printing the Cryofinity bins.

Thank you for reading this far, and I hope you find it useful in organizing another aspect of your home. If you really do love this, please drop me a boost or two, and I look forward to seeing everyone's prints they have done. If anyone would like me to generate any other sizes, please do let me know and I'll try to do them as quickly as I reasonably can. I am going to suggest that the bins remain as 25U or 35U heights to keep more uniform layer heights
