3D printing a simple cube is a common test for evaluating a printer’s performance. It helps check several key aspects of the printer’s accuracy, calibration, and overall functionality. Here’s what a cube test can reveal:
1. Dimensional Accuracy
- After printing, measuring the cube’s dimensions (e.g., a 20mm test cube should measure 20x20x20mm) helps verify if the printer’s X, Y, and Z-axis steps are correctly calibrated.
- Deviations indicate incorrect stepper motor calibration, belt tension issues, or scaling errors.
2. Layer Adhesion & Print Quality
- Examining the cube’s walls and top layers shows if the layers are bonding correctly.
- Poor adhesion could indicate incorrect temperature settings, extrusion issues, or cooling problems.
3. First Layer Quality
- Ensuring the first layer is even and properly adhered to the build plate confirms bed leveling and Z-offset calibration.
- If the first layer is too thin or too thick, it can indicate a need for re-leveling or adjusting the Z-axis offset.
4. Over-Extrusion or Under-Extrusion
- Bulging or blobs on the cube’s surface suggest over-extrusion (too much filament being pushed).
- Gaps or inconsistent walls suggest under-extrusion (not enough filament).
- These issues can be fixed by adjusting the extrusion multiplier (flow rate) or E-steps calibration.
5. Cooling & Overheating Issues
- If the top of the cube is warped or sagging, it might indicate poor cooling or excessive print temperature.
- Proper fan settings and temperature control help prevent overheating artifacts.
6. Z-Wobble or Layer Shifting
- A wavy or inconsistent pattern on the sides of the cube could indicate mechanical issues like loose belts, wobbly Z-rods, or frame instability.
- Layer shifts could also mean that the printer’s acceleration and jerk settings need adjustment.
7. Ghosting & Vibrations
- If you see faint, repeated patterns of features on the cube’s walls (ghosting/ringing), it may be due to excessive speed or loose printer parts.
- Reducing print speed or tightening belts can help.
