PLEASE WAIT TO PRINT ROCK #14 IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE SO YET. I'M WORKING TO IMPROVE THIS ROCK TO MAKE CLIMBING A BIT EASIER FOR THE 1/24 SCALE SIZE. I WILL SEND AN UPDATE ONCE IT IS FINISHED, PRINTED AND TESTED. If you have already printed it, it will still work but will be more difficult climb.
VIDEOS of my Axial 1/24 Scale using these rocks to climb the XL Rocks using a combination of Medium and Large Rocks to reach the top of the XL Rocks (Double stack height rocks)…..
VIDEO 2
These are the LARGE ROCKS and should be used along with the Medium and XL Crawler Park Rocks I've created. I've provided 7 rocks for the time being. The rocks have been numbered on the base plate so you can find the ones you like best should you wish to print additional ones. These number follow a chronological order from the medium rocks followed by the XL Rocks and the numbers continue on with the Large Rocks.
WAIT…… If you are using a stock crawler that has not been modified or upgraded you may not be able to successfully climb these LARGE rocks and should consider the Medium size rocks instead. These rocks are pretty steep and are quite challenging. Just wanted to give you a fair warning before you print these and then find out your crawler can't climb it. You can always start with the Medium Rocks which are in another section. If you find yourself able to climb the medium rocks, then for sure…. using the medium rocks in conjunction with these Large rocks will help you get the job done.
I initially created them for the 1/18 scales to climb….. but I'm a big fan of the 1/24 scale as well and so I decided to modify them a bit before releasing them and make some of them compatible with the 1/24 scale crawlers.
These rocks were specifically designed to work with the XL Rocks. So although you can mix them around with other size rocks and other large rocks, they are limited. When making them, I designed them to go counter-clockwise around the XL Rocks. I designed them around the XL Rocks to try and get close to the XL Rocks and also try to fill gaps as much as possible although I was limited due to the height I was attempting to achieve by the XL Rocks (Double Stack Rocks). One of the pictures shows how I have them going around the two XL Rocks. They are placed in chronological order.. 10, 11, 12…etc, with 10 starting on the left side of XL Rock 8 then 11 in the corner then 12, 13, then 14 in the corner of XL Rock 9 and then 15 on the side.
Printing Notes……. Same as all the other plate dimensions used in the crawler park that uses this type of interlocking system. I print the rocks in .28 and I did not use supports. I used a Bambu X1 Carbon and although it stated it needed supports, I chose not to and they have printed just fine. I used 15% density. I've had users inquire about using 5% or 10%. Keep in mind, these rocks need to have some weight to them especially these Large and the Medium rocks as your Crawler is sometimes hanging off the edge. Sometimes you have to give some throttle to get over a spot and you don't want the rocks to shift or come unlocked from each other. 15% seems to be the sweet spot, but you do as you wish. I know were dealing with 1/24 scale and 1/18 but if you put metal upgrades, then your going to half some strain on the edges of these rocks, just my thoughts.
Additional Info:
- Rock #14 was modified to have a bigger surface at the top when attempting to climb up to the XL rocks.
- I have added 3 new Rocks added. Rock #17 is a new large rock. Rocks #18 #19 are new medium rocks to help 1/24 scale crawlers reach the top of the XL Rocks. I will be providing in this additional info section some combinations I've used to successfully climb to the top. Planning on also linking some you tube videos to show the video of the climb.
- There are many combinations you can do with these rocks depending on how you place them. You can rotate or place them in different orders but keep in mind some of the corner LARGE Rocks (designed to climb toward a corner of the plate) may not fit in certain circumstances due to overlapping rock. These corner rocks were purposely made to help fill the large gaps that were present.
- Texture Paint - I recommend using Krylon Fusion All-In-One Textured Granite. It gives a nice color to the rocks and the rocks become much more grippier than just plastic which causes tires to slip more. The texture on this paint is like a mid grit sandpaper. It works great with my crawlers.
- WARNING - If you try to print these rocks using the Fuzzy Skin option, the plates will not interlock. I tested this after a user recommended this option. Keep in mind, if you know what your doing, you can prevent Fuzzy Skin on the side of the plates which should then make the plates work properly. I did not enable Fuzzy Skin on these files.
- If your using a 1/18 scale crawler, you can get away with using Large Rocks only to climb up to the XL Rocks which I have successfully done using my FX118 Katana Jeep. Some of these Large Rocks may be too steep even for a 1/18 scale depending on your setup and may need to use medium rocks in front of the large rocks to help you reach the top of the XL Rocks.
IMPORTANT NOTE…… Stock crawlers without modifications may struggle climbing many of the rocks I've designed. There's a few MEDIUM rocks that have a less steep sides and stock crawlers “should” be able to climb those rocks. As far as the Large rocks and the steeper sides of the medium rocks, you're gonna need to do some upgrades or have a crawler that is a good climber. These rocks were made to push your trucks and challenge you as the driver.
Enjoy!!
