Magnetic Lid & Latch System: At the core of this design is a fun feature of a magnetically closing lid. Though it's not just a typical magnetic closure that you have to pry open. With the integrated latch in the closed position, the magnets between the latch and the lid attack keeping the lid close. Sliding the latch to the open position will shift the magnets such that the polarity is then opposite, causing them to repel and the lid to release and crack open. Please see the diagram in the attached photos for a visual representation of the mechanism.
Size Options: The print profile includes two size options, a tall and a short box. Both boxes have an external width of 180mm and dept of 124mm. The short box has an external height of 27.5mm while the tall box sits at a height of 45.5mm.
Stackable Design: All boxes will stack together with protrusions designed to keep them aligned and stable. You can stack short boxes with tall boxes and vice versa. The lids footprint of both boxes are identical.
Modular Internal Division: The biggest feature of this design is the modular internal division which offers a multitude of options. Both the tall and short boxes have internal grooves at a 12mm interval in both directions. Combine this with the optional dividers to divide your boxes however you want. If you want to change how the box is divided, you can do so by rearranging the internal dividers, there is no need to reprint the box.
Trays: I've included an array of trays with pre-defined divisions. The same trays can be used in a tall or short box. In the short box they will occupy the full volume of the box. In the tall box, it sits in the top half of the volume, leaving the bottom half free for additional items. The trays with loosely and can be easily removed from the boxes. If you want to use the tray with a tall box, you can print the short modular dividers to divide the bottom half of the volume.
Print Profile Options: There is only one print profile with all of the options available directly on it. The parts have been split by plates to represent the different options. The “Lid & Latch” plates are specific to the size of box you choose, make sure to select the correct plate for your desired option.
Imbedded Magnets: The magnets in the lid and latch are imbedded within the print. Once finished, they are invisible which gives a nice clean look. To do so, there is a pause added to the plate at layer 14 which will let you insert the magnets. ATTENTION! The magnets need to be inserted in a very specific orientation for the mechanism to work. Please refer to the screenshot of the slicer attached in the photos of this model, it has all of the details and instructions on how to insert the magnets correctly. You do not need to use all 10 magnets, 4 is enough to have a properly working latch mechanism but the more you use, the stronger the lid closure will be.
Assembly: To assemble the box together you will need four 2x50mm pins. Two are used to secure the latch to the side of the box and two are used to create the pivot point for the lid.
Additional Notes:
- Scalling the design will not work because of the required hole size for the magnets and pins.
- The design is A1 mini compatible, you will use the whole 180mm width.
- Here's a link to a video I posted, showing how the mechanism works: [https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/s/CZMhe4KmMg](https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/s/CZMhe4KmMg)
- I have a simpler box model with a lid but no latch / magnetic closure if you are looking for a quicker and simpler print: [https://makerworld.com/en/models/753056-stackable-box-with-lid-modular-internal-division#profileId-686976](https://makerworld.com/en/models/753056-stackable-box-with-lid-modular-internal-division#profileId-686976)
