Workspaces are evolving, but traditional desk risers remain outdated—offering minimal customization, lackluster aesthetics, and fixed heights that don’t cater to individual needs. Most rely on hydraulic mechanisms for adjustability, making them costly and complex. To address these limitations, I designed the Height-Adjustable Hexagon Desktop Riser, a modular and visually appealing alternative that allows users to personalize their workspace with ease.
Inspiration: A Contest That Sparked Innovation
This design was born out of the MakerWorld Desk Riser Contest, which challenged participants to create an innovative desk riser. Analyzing existing solutions revealed a clear gap: most risers are static, uninspiring, and non-adjustable without mechanical components. My goal was to develop a simple yet highly functional riser that enhances both ergonomics and aesthetics.
Hexagonal Design: More Than Just Looks
I chose the hexagonal shape for a reason—it’s not just visually appealing but also structurally superior. Hexagons are known for their strength and efficient weight distribution, making them a natural choice for stacking and load-bearing applications. This modular system allows users to snap-fit hexagonal pieces together, adjusting the riser height according to their preference.
Additionally, the design incorporates built-in mobile and pen holders on both sides, ensuring that essential accessories are always within reach. This enhances convenience while maintaining a clean and organized workspace.
Adjustability: A Riser That Grows with You
Unlike fixed-height risers, this fully modular system allows users to build their desired height:
- Two hexagons provide an 80mm height
- Three hexagons increase it to 110mm
- Additional hexagons can be added for further height customization
This adaptability ensures users can create an ergonomic setup tailored to their needs, whether using a laptop, monitor, or additional accessories.
Material & Strength: Built for Durability
The riser is 3D-printed using PLA, ABS, or similar high-strength materials, offering both durability and lightweight construction. It is designed to support up to 10 kg, making it sturdy enough for monitors, laptops, and other office essentials.
Design Challenges: Perfecting the Snap-Fit Mechanism
One of the biggest challenges in the development process was achieving the right snap-fit tolerance. Early prototypes had loose connections or required excessive force to assemble, leading to multiple design iterations. After refining the interlocking system, I developed a secure yet easily adjustable fit, ensuring the hexagonal pieces hold together firmly without requiring additional fasteners.
Target Audience & Future Improvements
This design is ideal for professionals, students, and workspace enthusiasts who value both functionality and aesthetics. It stands out from conventional risers by offering customization, modularity, and a sleek design.
Looking ahead, future improvements include integrating cable management for better workspace organization. Additionally, customizable color options and material enhancements could further expand its appeal.
