This is an updated design to my previous compact spool holder. The purpose of this spool holder design is to decrease the overall footprint of the printer. This spool holder saves much more space than the stock spool holder included with the A1 mini, which veers off at an angle making for an unwieldy and inefficient use of space.

Thanks to the feedback on the previous design, this spool holder has several improvements:

1. No more “lip piece.” This design doesn’t use an extra lip piece during the printing process to form the overhang for the spool holder mount. Instead, the mount will be screwed in place via the two preexisting holes on the A1-mini printer. The design uses the screws already included in the A1 mini.
2. Reversible pin holder (? I don’t know the word to accurately describe it, but it is the cylinder that holds the spool holder). One of the critical oversights of the previous design was that the attachment slot on the pin holder forced you to mount the cylinder facing towards the printer. Now, the pin holder slots are reversible, so you can configure it however you please.

3. Rotatable arm: perhaps the most notable design improvement of this updated spool holder. One critique that I saw over and over again (and was well aware of) in the previous design was that the arm collides with the print volume. I use my A1 mini to primarily print flat objects no taller than 80 mm, and so sacrificing potential vertical print volume for a smaller footprint was a compromise I was willing to make. However, not everyone uses their printer like this, as so many people were quick to point out.

   This updated design addresses this problem by letting you rotate the arm 90 degrees out for proper clearance during taller prints. Whenever you don’t need to use that vertical volume you can fold the arm back in for a more compact footprint. In addition, if you are tight in space and aren’t using the printer anymore, you can fold the arm back in for a compact form for storage. The rotation feature also makes it much easier to load the spool of filament.
