UK & International Switch & Socket Surround

A customisable version of my original glow-in-the-dark light switch surround, now expanded to cover the UK, Germany, Brazil and China.

I originally made the fixed 107 × 107 × 2 mm version for the light switches around my own house. It fits tightly around the switch plate, so mine do not need glue.

The original ready-to-print version is still available for anyone who just wants to print it without using the customizer.

Choose the country file that matches your switch or socket system.

Each version includes its own local plate sizes, manufacturer ranges, terminology and clearly labelled presets.

All four versions use millimetres.

The separate US version uses inches and is available as its own model.

Quick Fit Test   

Not sure about the size?

Choose the Thin Fit-Test Ring before printing the complete surround.

The test ring uses the exact selected:

• Opening size
• Clearance
• Corner shape
• Orientation

It prints quickly and uses very little filament, making it an easy, low-waste way to check the fit first.

Fit and Clearance

The opening includes 0.5 mm total clearance by default.

This adds approximately 0.25 mm around each side of the switch or socket plate. You can increase or reduce it to suit your printer and the actual plate.

The surround fits around the outside of the existing plate. Mine fit tightly without glue, although a small amount of glue can still be used if needed.

Always measure the actual plate before printing. Sizes can vary slightly between manufacturers, product ranges and older installations.

Outdoor Plates — Check Fit Carefully

• Outdoor weatherproof — 90 × 90 mm

Weatherproof switches can have lids, hinges and deeper housings.

Print the test ring first and check that the surround will not interfere with any moving parts.

The UK version also includes Custom width and height for anything not listed.

Rectangular presets can be rotated between horizontal and vertical.

Deutschland / Germany

Die deutsche Version enthält häufig verwendete Schalter- und Steckdosenprogramme mit deutscher und englischer Benutzeroberfläche.

The German version includes common switch and socket systems with a German and English interface.

Preset groups include common systems from manufacturers such as:

• Busch-Jaeger

• Kopp

Presets are clearly labelled with the manufacturer, series, number of positions and outside dimensions.

German systems are not all the same size, even when the electrical parts appear similar.

Select the correct manufacturer range or use Benutzerdefiniert / Custom.

Brasil / Brazil

A versão brasileira inclui tamanhos comuns de placas para interruptores e tomadas, com controles em Português do Brasil e Inglês.

The Brazilian version includes common Brazilian switch and socket plates with a Brazilian Portuguese and English interface.

The terms 4×2 and 4×4 refer to the installation-box family. The finished outside dimensions can still vary between manufacturers, so presets are labelled by brand and range.

Use Personalizado / Custom when your plate is not listed.

中国 / China

中国版本包含中国常用的开关和插座面板尺寸，并提供简体中文和英文界面。

The Chinese version includes common Chinese switch and socket systems with a Simplified Chinese and English interface.

Preset groups include:

The common 86 type is listed first, followed by the 118 and 120 systems.

Custom Options

Depending on the selected country version, you can:

• Choose a country-specific preset
• Enter a custom plate width and height
• Enter the finished opening size directly
• Set the border width
• Enter the finished outside dimensions
• Adjust the total fit clearance
• Rotate rectangular presets
• Choose square or rounded inner corners
• Choose square or rounded outer corners
• Adjust the inner and outer corner radius
• Choose flat, rounded or chamfered top edges
• Adjust the surround thickness
• Add raised or cut-through text
• Add a built-in symbol
• Export raised details separately for two-colour printing
• Choose Normal or Extreme High curve quality
• Print a thin fit-test ring

Text and symbols automatically scale to stay inside the available border.

For cut-through text, a stencil-style font works best. Normal fonts can lose the loose centres of letters such as A, B, D, O, P, Q and R.

Braille — UK Version Only

The UK customizer also includes:

• Raised uncontracted Braille
• Text and Braille together
• Adjustable dot diameter
• Adjustable dot height
• Horizontal and vertical dot spacing
• Adjustable gap between Braille characters
• Automatic fitting within the selected border

Short wording and wider borders give the clearest results.

The Braille is designed for practical FDM tactile identification but is not certified to accessibility regulations.

Braille is not included in the German, Brazilian or Chinese versions. Those versions include text and built-in symbols only.

Printing

The back stays completely flat, so the surround prints directly on the build plate.

• No supports needed
• Suitable for normal PLA
• Suitable for glow-in-the-dark filament
• Can be printed in one colour
• Raised text and symbols can be exported separately for another colour

Glow-in-the-dark filament charges under normal light, but a UV light makes it glow much brighter.

It is still visible in a properly dark room without using UV.
