My First Mammoth Project: Modular, Stackable Shoe Rack

This is my very first mammoth project, and I’ve spent quite a bit of time working on it. I am excited to present my design for a modular, stackable shoe rack.

A Quick Introduction

Before diving into the details, I'd like to mention that I didn’t have a lot of time to test and print multiple prototypes, so the first prototype you’ll see may have some issues with the connections. These were however overhauled in the revised version. The initial design was a bit too optimistic in some of the connection points, which led to issues like weak joints or parts that didn’t fit as intended. But don’t worry, all of these mistakes have been fixed in the updated design and the length of the whole parts has been changed.

The Concept

This is not just a shoe rack that’s intended to go inside a closet or onto a shelf. Instead, it’s a self-contained shoe storage unit that you can build from scratch. It is meant to function as its own stand alone cabinet.

The key feature of the design is that the bottom plates are movable along a rail system. This allows you to adjust the spacing between the shelves to accommodate different types of shoes. For reference, the shoes in the image are size 45, but you can adapt the system for different shoe sizes and types. The versatility of this rack allows it to hold a wide range of footwear, from sneakers to boots to dress shoes.

Version 1 vs. Version 2

While Version 1 was a great start, I quickly noticed some issues. As mentioned earlier, the connections were too optimistic: the joints weren’t strong enough and the pieces tended to get stuck or break when assembled. In Version 2 I’ve made some improvements:

  • Wider shelf supports: I increased the width of the supporting plates so the shelves now have better stability. This should prevent the structure from becoming wobbly, and your shoes will stay securely in place.
  • Stronger connections: The joints have been redesigned for better durability, ensuring that they won’t break or get stuck during assembly. The improved connection system makes for a cleaner and sturdier build.

Encouraging DIY Enthusiasts

This design was created not only for myself but also as a source of inspiration for other DIY enthusiasts who are interested in creating their own custom storage solutions. If you like this concept, feel free to modify it, improve it, or add your own personal touch. The beauty of a modular system is that it allows you to experiment and adjust the design to your exact needs.

Conclusion

This project has been a great learning experience for me. I’ve put a lot of thought into this design, and I’m happy with the improvements in Version 2. If you decide to give it a try, I hope you’ll enjoy building your very own shoe rack, whether it’s for your hallway, bedroom or closet. It’s modular, customizable, and best of all, it works.

Feel free to ask any questions or share your own ideas for future improvements! I have a few ideas left with LEDs or adjustable ground to gain better angles.
