A mechanical locket inspired by the accessory from the movie The Illusionist.

I think it’s more practical as a keychain, but feel free to use it however you like.

It starts in an oval shape, but it can be rotated to form a heart. In the heart configuration, the locket opens to reveal two photo spaces.

You can find simpler models out there that are easier to print and assemble. However, I wasn’t satisfied with their final appearance, so I decided to design my own. I think it turned out quite elegant. Every visible part is printed face-down for a perfect finish.

The assembly involves gluing a few parts and inserting 2mm x 2mm magnets, but the process is simple and intuitive. I’ll include assembly instructions.

Magnets are optional, but they significantly improve the final result. Depending on the filament’s expansion, magnets might fit too tightly—slightly heating them will resolve this issue.

Two distinct outer designs to choose from. Carefully align the magnets and pay special attention to their polarity.

Assembly Steps:

1. Glue the two halves with the central axis: 

   

    

2. Attach the smooth outer piece: 

   

    

3. Fit the two lids onto the main bodies (do not glue them yet):

   

    

4. Align the main piece with its symmetrical counterpart and glue the top part:
   Be cautious not to glue the rotating bodies; they need to move freely.

   

    

5. Test the mechanism: Ensure all parts rotate properly and the assembly is smooth.

    

6. Insert the magnets: Pay close attention to the polarity when adding the magnets. They should fit snugly without glue. If they are too tight, gently heat the magnet; if too loose, apply a small amount of glue.

Notes:

• Magnets enhance the locket’s functionality and elegance, but they are optional.
• If any part of the assembly feels tight or stiff, test with small adjustments or light sanding for better rotation.
